About me
Finalist AFF 2024 -- Drama Teleplay Pilot
With twenty years of experience in international development and humanitarian aid work, Andrew Zadel has managed operational bases in Yemen, Iraq, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other active conflict zones. He was elected to the Board of Directors of Doctors Without Borders Canada in 2019 and served a three-year term.
Andrew has written several plays for the stage, three of which have been produced by Praxis Theatre in Toronto. Steel, his one-man show about migrant laborers on the Canadian railway, won accolades at both the Montreal and London (Canada) Fringe Festivals. Andrew was also part of the team of playwrights that created The Longest Winter, a show performed in both Albanian and Serbian communities in Kosovo under a United Nations program to address the issue of missing persons.
The Displaced, Andrew's submission for this year's AFF Screenplay Competition, is a finalist for best drama teleplay pilot. The Displaced follows a misfit band of international aid workers who must outsmart the National Security forces of Sudan to bring food, water, and shelter to victims of the dreaded Janjaweed militia. The teleplay is based on Andrew’s experiences working in Darfur from 2007 to 2009.
